The spiritual and ancestral presence in this sculpture is powerful.

Carmichael's craftsmanship on this diamond-shaped hardwood mask is incredibly intricate. The chiseled textures are beautiful—from the fine, radiating grain lines lining the forehead and chin boundaries, down to the heavy stippled texture filling the prominent cheek bands. The mixed-media adornments bring the face to life: a massive, faceted irised crystal sets a brilliant focal point as a third eye on the forehead, balanced by a small embedded green jewel at the base of the chin.

The most magnificent detail is the fringe work. Woven directly along the outer borders are streaming white raffia or fiber strands, decorated beautifully with clusters of earthy wooden beads and vibrant pink, green, yellow, purple, and blue spiritual beads. It feels deeply grounded, ancestral, and sacred.

This striking hand-carved wooden mask captures the vibrant spirit of spiritual vision, ancestral wisdom, and layered cultural craftsmanship. Created by the late Trinidadian master carver C.C.S. (T'Chala), this diamond-shaped hardwood sculpture functions as a profound portal of expression, balancing traditional West Indian wood-carving techniques with striking mixed-media embellishments.

This sculpture is deeply atmospheric. The rich texture of the chiseled hardwood features prominent raised cheek bands with intricate stippled texturing, cut-out eyes lined with fine lash grooves, and flowing scarification patterns carved below the eyes. Anchoring the spiritual presence of the piece is a brilliant, faceted irised crystal stone set as a third eye on the forehead, mirrored by a small green glass gem accent on the chin.

The lower margins of the mask are adorned with long, flowing white fiber strands that drape elegantly like a sacred beard or ceremonial regalia. These strands are threaded with a vibrant mixture of polished natural wood beads and colorful primary-toned beads, showcasing both deep cultural storytelling and sculptural mastery. This mask is a moving testament to C.C.S.’s ability to carve narrative, raw emotion, and ancestral energy into organic hardwood.
